Why We Do What We Do

Over 2 million children in America are diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities—yet less than 40% have insurance coverage for the care they need. In the U.S., approximately 1 in 6 children aged 3 to 17 years were diagnosed with a developmental disability between 2009 and 2017.

Here in Maryland, the need for support is even greater:

  • Maryland has the second-highest national rate of children living with autism (1 in 49 children under 8 years old, 1 in 33 boys, and 1 in 128 girls).

  • In Baltimore, over 56% of children have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which significantly contribute to poor mental health outcomes.

Children living with developmental disabilities are four times more likely to experience three or more ACEs, making their need for mental health and behavioral support even more critical. Yet, despite this overwhelming need, the number of certified professionals available to provide care is shrinking.

The Mental Health Crisis in Context

According to the CDC, mental health impacts how we think, feel, and act. It shapes how we handle stress, relate to others, and make meaningful decisions. Strong mental health is a cornerstone of purposeful, thriving communities.

However, for children facing developmental disabilities and multiple ACEs, barriers to accessing culturally relevant, trauma-informed care can delay essential interventions.

Our Solution: Holistic, Culturally Relevant Behavioral Health Services

With years of experience providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, Sankofa Behavioral Health offers tailored, individualized services that foster meaningful skill-building, including self-regulation and functional communication.

To address Baltimore’s mental health crisis and lack of access to professionals, we offer:

  • Early intervention and treatment that prioritizes vulnerable populations

  • In-person and virtual ABA therapy and mental health counseling

  • Culturally relevant, trauma-informed care for long-term, sustainable growth

We are committed to expanding access to care. While we accept various forms of insurance, we intentionally prioritize Medicaid recipients to provide high-quality services to the communities that need them most.
